THE COMPOSING ROOM

The “composing room” is the room in which the type and related material
is stored, and where the typesetting takes place.

This section of the site is concerned with the tools, equipment,
and techniques employed in the composing room, except for
the type itself (covered in the Type & Typefaces section),
and typesetting machinery (covered in the Type Technology section).

The composing room pictured above is from the 1923 ATF Catalogue.
They weren’t all this neat. On the other hand, most of them had roofs.
